Earthworks évoque la terre localement en tant que sol, et également en tant que croûte terrestre à la surface de notre planète. En contact direct avec la vie végétale et animale, le sol est un support de vie, de mort et de transformation des matières organiques et minérales. Il se compose aussi de plusieurs couches, stockant des informations du passé, qu’elles soient humaines, environnementales ou liées aux autres êtres vivants.

Earthworks fait autrement référence au terme défini par Robert Smithson dans les années 60 pour désigner les installations en pleine nature utilisant la terre comme matériau principal. La photographie était le seul médium pour conserver une trace de ces œuvres éphémères in situ. Dans cette série, la photographie devient le support de création car la transformation n’a pas lieu dans le paysage mais sur le support photosensible lui-même. Des pellicules glanées auprès d’anonymes sont enfouies dans de la terre pour y être sculptées pendant plusieurs semaines. Le contexte humide favorise la décomposition altérant ces films argentiques. De ce processus soustractif, les supports de mémoire apparaissent métamorphosés et révèlent les quatre composantes des sols : la matière organique, l’eau, l’air et les minéraux.

Un lien apparaît entre le caractère éphémère des paysages qui y étaient photographiés et le support en décomposition, devenant aussi évolutif que le paysage lui-même. Les éléments chimiques polluants fusionnent avec la matière organique des sols jusqu’à ne plus distinguer le naturel de l’artificiel. Ce processus irréversible est semblable à la mémoire dont une part nous semble réelle et une autre fictive, faite de plusieurs souvenirs enfouis qui s'entremêlent et s'effacent. Sur ces vestiges industriels retournés à la terre se développent du mycélium, un champignon présent dans le sol, recouvrant les supports photosensibles en décomposition.

Earthworks

« Tout ensemencement est littéralement un crépuscule : la lumière du soleil glisse dans le corps de la Terre pour l’animer et en ressortir sous une forme métamorphosée. D’autre part, en tant que distribution de fragments de matières qui capteront et captureront la lumière solaire dans la chair minérale et « grise » de la terre, un ensemencement est une forme d’éclairage, de distribution d’une lumière astrale dans l’espace terrestre. Semer signifie obliger la terre à se nourrir de l’astre solaire, à assimiler sa force, à en devenir le dépôt de matériel. De même, le paysage est moins une figure géologique, un aménagement de la pierre ou de l’espace qu’une certaine économie de la lumière. Se dessine alors une sorte d’analogie ou d’identité commune entre le semeur et l’artiste-peintre : dans les deux cas une manipulation de la lumière a lieu, donc une tentative de redessiner le monde à partir de la distribution de sa lumière. »
